| Nigeria: New Pension Scheme'll Reduce Poverty - Finance Minister
Finance Minister, Mrs. Nenadi Usman said on Wednesday that the new pension scheme was introduced to reduce poverty in old age and avert a situation where pension entitlements would exceed the salaries of active workers in the public service. Usman said that the new contributory pension system became imperative due to the problem presented by the old scheme, which made it impossible for the government to continue to fund it. .
Study suggests Americans deluded about retirement
Many Americans are deluding themselves about how much they need to save for retirement and how much assistance they'll receive from Social Security and the traditional pension plans that fewer employers are offering. That's according to The Employee Benefit Research Institute. The Washington, D.C.-based research organization's 17th annual Retirement Confidence survey, released yesterday, indicates that while 70 percent are either very or somewhat confident about their financial security in retirement, nearly half -- 49 percent -- have saved less than $25,000. Moreover, nearly a quarter of those who are very confident aren't currently saving for retirement, and 37 percent haven't calculated how much they'll need. "I think to a very large extent they're deluding themselves," said Jack VanDerhei, a Temple University professor and co-author of the report.

Amateur chefs line up to dazzle judges
In a Washington County version of "Iron Chef America," appropriately titled the Men's Culinary Classic, local amateur chefs will test their prowess in the kitchen and maybe go home with a prize for their efforts. Last year, the first classic, held at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Chartiers, drew 27 entrants who vied for the People's Choice Award. This year, the fund-raiser for Community Action Southwest, scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. April 21, is expected to draw more chef wannabees. .
